LSSU is taking registrations for summer sports camps
SAULT STE. MARIE – Lake Superior State University is sponsoring skill-development camps for athletes in cross country, track and field, basketball, hockey, tennis, softball and volleyball, and participants of a variety of ages and abilities will receive instruction from and interact with college coaches and elite athletes.
The LSSU men’s and women’s basketball teams are offering specialized camps (shooting, position, team) and general skills camps for boys and girls. The Lakers’ second annual Elite Camp for high school boys and girls will be July 18-20.
“We are very proud of our kids and how they are as people, and this is a great opportunity for them to be role models in the area,” noted LSSU men’s basketball coach Steve Hettinga. “We start at the lowest level with the Little Lakers and end with the Elite Camp. We offer a wide variety, working with beginners all the way up to advanced. We keep the prices reasonable and give kids the opportunity to learn from some of the best players in the state.”
LSSU Hockey Skills Clinic sessions will be broken into age groups, and special camps will be offered for adults and elite girls. For the first time in several years, volleyball team and skills camps will be available on the LSSU campus in June and August.
Saturday, June 4, is the final session for the Little Lakers Softball Pitching Clinics. Registrations are filling for the upcoming boys basketball team camp (June 8-10), boys and girls basketball individual camps (June 20-23), girls hockey elite camp (June 26-30), volleyball team camp (June 24-26), and tennis (June 20-23). Sessions will continue throughout June, July and early August.
LSSU’s newest head coaches, Ben Kaszeta (volleyball) and Justin Rees (women’s basketball) look forward to meeting the community for the first time during this summer’s camps. LSSU tennis coach Tom Linhart’s goal is to build interest in tennis locally.
“My goal is to spread awareness and grow tennis in Sault Ste. Marie,” Linhart said. “From young kids to adults, we want them to come out, get involved and play tennis.”
Camp dates, costs and age restrictions vary, and registration information is available on the following web sites: http://www.lssulakers.com/information/Camps or http://www.lssu.edu/summercamps. Information brochures are also available at the Norris Center.
