SAULT STE. MARIE – Lake Superior State’s sixth annual Women’s Walk, which begins at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Norris Center, will surpass the $300,000 milestone and continue to serve as a primary fund-raiser for LSSU women’s athletics.
“Last year’s Women’s Walk generated $90,000, and all of that money goes to teams that generally have a harder time raising enough money to cover all of their operating expenses,” LSSU Director of Athletics Kris Dunbar said. “What’s great about this event is that the athletes play a major role in the fund-raising campaign, then directly benefit from its success. They have taken ownership of it.”
LSSU women’s basketball, volleyball, tennis, track and field, cross country, softball and golf team together for the Women’s Walk. Each program sets a fund-raising target based on their operating needs for the year. Teams of walkers raise money by collecting pledges and donations from family, friends and community members. Participants then take part in a 60 minute walk/run around the campus of LSSU. This visible show of support has become one of the premier fund-raising events for the LSSU Department of Athletics.
Walkers have a chance to win several prizes, including a grand prize iPad mini.
Registration for the 2014 Women’s Walk begins at 8 a.m. at the Norris Center, and the walk begins at 9 a.m.
