Scott is one of 12 GLIAC Commissioner's Award recipients for the spring of 2009
BAY CITY - Lake Superior State junior Katie Scott was one of 12 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference 2009 spring sport athletes to receive the GLIAC Commissioner's Awards.
The awards, sponsored by Meijer, Inc., are presented after the fall, winter and spring athletic seasons to six male and six female student-athletes in the GLIAC who excel in the classroom and on the playing field.
Scott, who is a senior academically and received an exercise science undergraduate degree this spring, is also one of the GLIAC's two nominees for the 2009 NCAA Woman of the Year Award. She will be attending graduate school at Saginaw Valley State next year and has one year of cross country and track eligibility remaining.
Scott left LSSU with school records in the indoor mile, 3,000-meters and 5,000-meters, and outdoor 1,500, 3,000, 5,000 and 10,000-meter runs as well as the 3,000-meter steeplechase. She placed fourth in the steeplechase at the 2009 GLIAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships and was ranked 21st nationally in the event with a school-record time of 11:02.61. She was also ranked 30th nationally in the 10,000-meter run, an event in which she competed in one time this season.
The six-time U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association academic all-American maintained a 3.78 grade point average while competing year-round and devoting numerous hours to community service. She was one of LSSU's most-active members of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, served as president of the LSSU Exercise Science Club, and put in practicum hours at the War Memorial Hospital Rehabilitation Center and as a fitness instructor for home school pupils.
