LSSU rookie shatters men's javelin record

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Freshman Ben Charbonneau shattered Lake Superior State's javelin record with a throw of 189-0 and placed third in the event Saturday at the University of North Florida Spring Break Open.

Charbonneau broke the old record of 177-2, which was originally set in 1973 and equaled in 2005.

"We competed well and the weather was good," LSSU coach Steve Eles said after the Lakers completed their second day of competition at UNF. "I was particularly pleased with our performances in the 1,500 and our women's shot put, and Ben had a very good day in the javelin."

Luke Allen placed 17^th in 4:09.22, and Ben Tarbutton was 18^th in 4:11.03 to lead a host of Lakers in the men's 1,500-meter run. Laura Lindsey was eighth in the women's shot put with a toss of 38-9, and Kimberlee Booms placed 10^th at 37-10.
