Lakers win 12 events at Dick Small Invitational

DEFIANCE, Ohio - The Lake Superior State men's and women's track and field teams won 12 events and both placed second at the 14^th annual Dick Small Invitational held Saturday at Defiance College.

School records were set by Ben Charbonneau in the men's javelin (59.24 meters), Katie Scott in the women's 5,000-meter run (17:52.20) and the Laker men's 4x800-meter relay team of Evan Williams, Luke Allen, Richard Gibson and Zach Lynch. The two-mile relay team had a winning time of 8:10.54.

Charbonneau broke his own school record and met the NCAA Provisional Qualifying Standard. He also qualified for academic All-America honors.

"This will currently rank him third in the country," LSSU coach Steve Eles said. "He had three great throws today. He fouled on a 59.9-meter throw."

Double winners included Scott in the 5K and the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Taylor Patton in the women's high jump and triple jump, and Patrick Wright in the men's long jump and triple jump.

"Katie Scott did very well and was close to the NCAA standard in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase while running the entire race by herself," Eles said. "She also came back and won the 5,000-meter in convincing fashion. Taylor Patton and Pat Wright had great efforts as well in multiple events. They lead the way for the men's and women's teams in terms of being our top point scorers."

The LSSU women finished second among seven teams, while the men were second among nine teams.

Other first-place finishers were Amanda Pieczynski in the women's 200-meter dash, Evan Williams in the men's 800-meter run, Allen in the men's 1,500-meter run and Ben Tarbutton in the men's 5,000-meter run.
