Charbonneau wins javelin at Bulldog Invite

BIG RAPIDS - Junior Ben Charbonneau placed first and sophomore Brandon Clemens finished fifth in the men's javelin to lead Lake Superior State at the Bulldog Invitational hosted Saturday by Ferris State.

Charbonneau, a former NCAA qualifier in the javelin, won the event with a throw of 55.55 meters (182-03). Clemens had a throw of 42.11 meters.

The Lakers posted 20 top-10 finishes during the meet. Sarah Gallagher led the Laker women by placing fifth in the 100-meter hurdles (:16.98) and tying for sixth in the long jump (4.84 meters). Amanda Garcia, Amanda Pieczynski, Jamie Wick and Gallagher took fifth in the 4x400-meter relay (4:16.61) and set a new school record.

Freshman Dena Bliss placed sixth in the women's 100-meter hurdles (:17.55) and the shot put (11.03 meters). Senior Kimberlee Booms was fifth in the hammer throw (40.98 meters) and seventh in the discuss throw (36.52 meters).

Multiple event standouts for the Laker men included Ben Monroe, who was fourth in the 200-meter dash (:22.48) and ninth in the 400-meter dash (:51.54). Sophomore Hans Riedel finished fourth in the discus throw (46.43 meters) and eighth in the shot put (13.35 meters). Riedel improved upon his former discus school record of 45.18 meters.

Freshman Jeremy Braman was fifth in the high jump (1.92 meters) and seventh in the 110-meter hurdles (:17.03). Freshman Riley Lytwynec placed eighth in the 400-meter hurdles (:58.93) and ninth in the long jump (5.96 meters).

Duke Invitational

Freshman Mark List ran the 10,000 meters at the Duke Invitational in Durham, N.C., and placed second with a time of 31:28.13, less than one minute off the school record, during his first collegiate 10k on the track. List was beaten by North Carolina freshman Matt Valeriani (31:05.80).

Senior Jake Hoover ran a new school record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:10.37. With that time, Hoover provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships and currently has the sixth fastest time in the nation. Hoover finished seventh in the event. Competitors placing ahead of him represented Duke, North Carolina State, Akron, Wake Forest and High Point.
