Lakers open indoor track and field season at SVSU Holiday Classic
UNIVERSITY CENTER - The Lake Superior State men's and women's track and field teams opened the 2010-11 indoor season Friday at the Saginaw Valley State Holiday Classic. Ben Monroe led LSSU with a first-place finish in the men's 200-meter dash. He had a time of :22.7.
Among Lake Superior State's other highlights were the advancement of Monroe and Patrick Wright to the men's 60-meter dash finals, Katie Winiarski's second-place finish in the women's high jump, and Jeremy Braman's third-place finish in the men's high jump.
Monroe qualified second and went on to place third in the 60-meters with a school-record time of :06.9, while Wright qualified third and finished seven in :07.0. In other sprint events, Amanda Garcia placed seventh in the 200-meter dash (:26.9), and she qualified ninth in the women's 60-meter dash (:08.1) and just missed making the finals. She established new school records in both events.
In the women's 400, Julia VandeKirkhove was fifth (1:03.3) and Courtney Gaskell seventh (1:04.8). On the men's side, Riley Lytwnec placed seventh in :51.9.
In the high jump, Winiarski cleared 1.61 meters, while Braman had a jump of 1.91 meters.
Jakie Hoover ran a 16:00 flat to finish third in the men's 5,000-meter run.
Kaleb Schweiger tied for third (13-6) and Jake Dean placed eighth (12-6) in the men's pole vault. Wright was sixth in the long jump (5.82 meters).
Laura Lindsey was sixth (11.45 meters) and Kimberlee Booms seventh (10.98 meters) in the women's shot put. They were fourth (14.04 meters) and sixth (13.32 meters), respectively, in the weight throw.
Hans Riedel finished fourth in the men's shot put (14.32 meters) and ninth in the weight throw (12.98 meters).
