Hoover wins steeplechase at Spartan Invitational

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Lake Superior State continued its prowess in the 3,000-meter steeplechase as senior Jake Hoover won the men's event at Saturday's 2011 Spartan Invitational held at the Ralph Young Track. The meet, hosted by Michigan State University, was the Lakers' outdoor season opener.

Hoover placed first with a time if 9:21.51, beating Grand Valley State's Aaron Denner (9:23.86).

The LSSU men's team placed third behind GVSU and Indiana Tech in the 4x400-meter relay. Riley Lytwynec, Patrick Wright, Zach Lynch and Ben Monroe finished in 3:26.61. Monroe was also third in the men's 100-meter dash with a hand-timed :10.90, while Wright was eighth in :11.59. Monroe took another third in the 200, finishing in :22.37, while Wright was 11th in :23.50.

Jeremy Braman tied for fourth in the men's high jump and set a new school record of 2.01 meters. He was 10th in the long jump at 6.37 meters and missed the finals by one spot.

Other top 10 finishers for the LSSU men were: (5,000-meter run) Mark List, ninth, 15:21.99; (400-meter hurdles) Lytwynec, 10th, :57.99; (javelin throw) Hans Riedel, 39.37 meters.

Amanda Pieczynski led the LSSU women's team by finishing ninth in the 200-meter dash in :28.20. Sarah Gallagher was also ninth in the 400-meter hurdles (1:11.26). Courtney Gaskell was ninth (24.44 meters) and Amanda Calhoun was 10th (22:49 meters) in the javelin throw.
