Eighteen LSSU athletes earn GLIAC All-Academic honors

BAY CITY – Five Lake Superior State University student-athletes received Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference All-Academic Excellence Awards, while 13 others received GLIAC All-Academic recognition for the Spring 2011 season.

Sophomore pitcher Christine Larkin (Troy, Mich.), along with track and field athletes Ben Charbonneau (junior/Sudbury, Ont.), Sean O’Mara (senior/Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.), Kayla Nowak (senior/Alpena, Mich.) and Amanda Pieczynski (senior/Posen, Mich.) posted grade point averages of 3.5 or better and qualified for academic excellence awards. Larkin is a biology major with a 3.94 GPA, while Pieczynski is an exercise science major with a 3.88 GPA.

Other track and field athletes with GPAs between 3.0 and 3.49 and receiving all-academic awards were Cody Carena (sophomore/Temperance, Mich.), Tyler Helsel (sophomore/Sand Lake, Mich.), Jake Hoover (senior/Capac, Mich.), John Preczewski (senior/Roscommon, Mich.), Hans Riedel (sophomore/Eau Claire, Wis.), Kimberlee Booms (senior/Harrison, Mich.), Sarah Gallagher (sophomore/Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) and Heather Millard (senior/Plainwell, Mich.)

Golfers Brent Vizina (sophomore/Indian River, Mich.) and Paul Dienes (sophomore/Traverse City, Mich.), and tennis players Sergiu Laza (sophomore/Toronto, Ont.), Jack Miller (senior/Marquette, Mich.) and Robert Nelson (senior/Grand Blanc, Mich.) also received all-academic honors.

During the 2010-11 school year, 53 Laker athletes representing 14 Division II varsity sports earned all-academic recognition.
