Laker men place seventh and women 12th at DII Team Challenge

GENEVA, Ohio - The Lake Superior State men's track and field team placed seventh among 22 teams, and the LSSU women's squad was 12th among 21 teams at the NCAA Division II Team Challenge hosted Saturday by SPIRE Institute.

LSSU recorded 11 top-10 finishes in the meet.

For the LSSU women, Shashawna Bennett was second in a school-record time of :08.61 and Leslie Ann Mitchell was third in :08.71 in the 60-meter hurdles. Bennett also finished third in the long jump with a distance of 5.37 meters. Becca Carruthers tied for eighth in the high jump with a height of 1.63 meters. LSSU's Shaina Walther, Julia van de Kerkove, Michaela Newberry and Mitchell also placed sixth in 3:59.64 and set a new school record in the 4x400-meter relay.

For the LSSU men, Ben Monroe notched third-place finishes in the 60-meter dash (:06.98) and 200-meter dash (:21.93). Monroe tied his own record in the 60 and broke Paul Davis' 200 school record.

Justin Balczak also took thirds in the 60-meter hurdles (:08.29) and long jump (6.46 meters). Zach Lynch was sixth in the 800-meter run (1:54.44), and Jason Brenton was third in the triple jump (14.47 meters).
