Lakers compete in multis at NMU

MARQUETTE - Lake Superior State's women's pentathlon and men's heptathlon records fell at last Friday's Northern Michigan University Multi Events Meet held at the Berry Events Center.

Freshman Justin Balczak broke the LSSU 55-meter hurdle record with a time of :07.73 and toppled the heptathlon record by scoring 5,163 points. His total was enough to automatically qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships. He shattered John Preczewski's heptathlon record of 4,111 points set last year.

Freshman Becca Carruthers placed eighth in the pentathlon with a school-record total of 2,727 points. She broke Sarah Gallagher's record of 2,504 points, which was also set last year.

Balczak won the 1,000-meter run, 55-meter hurdles, long jump and shot put on his way to the heptathlon title. LSSU teammate Kaleb Schweiger, who placed third among six competitors, won the pole vault with a school-record height of 4.25 meters. Laker Jeremy Braman, who was fourth, won the high jump.

Carruthers' best individual event finishes were fifths in the 800-meter run and high jump. Laker Margaret Beal placed 12th in the pentathlon.
