ALLENDALE – The Lake Superior State men's track and field team placed ninth among 24 teams in the The Big Meet Open Division standings as competition concluded Saturday at Grand Valley State. The Laker men's and women's teams posted a combined team finish of 15th among 40 teams.
Senior Oshane Thomas was the Lakers' lone winner, taking the men's open 400-meter dash in :48.91. Senior Robert Valdez was second in the high jump after clearing 2.00 meters, and sophomore Cole VanOosten finished seventh in the weight throw with a distance of 16.15 meters.
VanOosten also placed 11th in the shot put (14.82 meters). Roger Willford cleared 4.37 meters to tie for 11th in the pole vault, and Mike Rasnick cleared 3.77 meters to tie for 17th.
Yazin Joseph placed 18th in the men's 400-meter dash in :51.07 and 22nd in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of :09.04. Ben Deuling finished 21st in the 800-meter run in 1:59, and was followed by Travis Sutton in 27th (2:00.36) and Bryce DeGrammont in 35th (2:01.82).
LSSU's seven-man 3,000-meter run pack was led by Garrett Smith, who placed 15th in 8:58.54. Ryan Rogers was 22nd in 9:04.90 and Adam Birkeland 29th in 9:13.78. Jacob Baker placed 33rd, Zach Workman 41st, Andrew Vincent 45th and Dylan Richards 49th. Parker Wyngaard finished 28th in the mile with a time of 4:35.01.
For the Lake Superior State women's team, Lydia Heimonen placed 21st in the 3,000-meter run in 10:53.04, and MacKenzie Kelly was 38th in 11:24.55. Teammates Alexis Penzien and Sarah Swider tied for 22nd place in the high jump after clearing 1.37 meters. Penzien also finished 32nd in the long jump (4.72 meters), while Swider was 34th and Sophie Passino 39th.
Other women's highlights included Rebecca Lathrop's 42nd-place finish in the open mile (5:35.81) and Sara Ostwald's 53rd-place in the weight throw (10.12 meters). Kayli Fyke (8.63 meters) and Bobbie Love (8.61 meters) were 48th and 49th, respectively, in the shot put.
