Scott is named GLIAC Runner of the Week


HOUGHTON - Lake Superior State junior Katie Scott was the only female to finish under 20 minutes as she won the season-opening Upper Peninsula Collegiate Cross Country Opener with a 5K time of 19:45.9 on Friday at the Michigan Tech Trails.

Scott, who was named Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Runner of the Week, finished ahead of Wayne State's Lauren Kessler, who was second in 20:11.8. LSSU's top male finisher was Luke Allen, who was 21st with a time of 17:19.6.

Stacy Leyder was 17th for the LSSU women in 21:34.5, followed by Kayla Nowak, who was 23rd in 22:12. Laker Meghan Thomas was 34th (22:48.6), while Marissa Ingle was 47th (23:59.7), Chelsea Kreft 49th (24:09.8), Angela Perry 51st (24:39.3), Arin Baril 53rd (24:50.6), Alyse Smith 54th (24:57.7), Lindsey Mansfield 55th (25:07), Heather Millard 59th (26:07.3), Emily Bowen 61st (27:07.5), Helen-Ann Prince 64th (28:57) and Courtney Smith 69th (no time).

The LSSU women finished fourth among five teams with 76 points. Northern Michigan won the women's team event with 39 points.

Top five finishers for the LSSU men included Andy Gaul, who was 34th in 17:48.6, Jake Hoover, who was 36th in 18:09.4, Lucas Pease, who was 37th in 18:09.8, and Michael McPherson, who was 39th in 18:15.6.

Also placing for the Laker men were: 41. Sean Vardy, 18:20.9; 48. Joe Cantwell, 18:40.3; 55. Richard Gibson, 19:01.9; 58. Adam Smith, 19:06.2; 59. Nathan Smith, 19:23.4; 64. Dion Tchokreft, 20:30.9; 65. Alex Gustafson, 20:41.7; 68. Zach Lynch, 22:23.2; 69. D.J. Battistella, 23:53.7.

Wayne State won the men's team event with 23 points, followed by Michigan Tech with 34 and LSSU with 85.
