Scott wins again


MARQUETTE - Junior Katie Scott won for the third time this season, and freshmen Blaise Henning, Andy Gaul and Kayla Nowak placed among the top 20 to lead the Lake Superior State cross country team at the Upper Peninsula Collegiate Championships held last Friday at Northern Michigan.

Scott clocked a 19:32.7 to finish 42 seconds ahead of Michigan Tech's Laura Kangas, who was second in the women's race.

Senior Luke Allen led the Laker men with a ninth-place finish in 17:07.6.

In the women's race, Nowak was 18th in 21:38.8, followed by Stacy Leyder in 25th place (21:52.7) and Arin Baril in 38th place (23:09). Rounding out the finishers for the LSSU women's team were: 41. Sarah Christilaw (23:22.5); 42. Marissa Ingle (23:25.2); 44. Lindsey Mansfield (23:35.4); 45. Alyse Smith (23:37.4); 49. Heather Millard (24:56.9) and Helen-Ann Prince (28:06.8).

NMU won the women's team title with 31 points, followed by MTU with 38 and LSSU with 70.

In the men's race, Henning placed 13th in 17:14.2, while Gaul was 18th in 17:22.3. Freshman Sean Vardy finished 25th in 17:54, while sophomore Lucas Pease was 28th in 18:04.1. Two more freshmen finished in the top seven for the LSSU men as Richard Gibson was 30th in 18:06.1 and Joe Cantwell was 31st in 18:06.4.

Other LSSU competitors were: 34. Michael McPherson (18:11.6); 37. Adam Smith (18:27.2); 38. Mackenzie Oglesby (18:30.1); 46. Nathan Smith (18: 46.5); 54. Alex Gustafson (19:42.6); 55. Dion Tchokreft (20:01.6); 58. Zach Lynch (20:47.9); 59. DJ Battistella (21:58.8).
