Two Laker men record top-five finishes at Lake Superior Challenge

SAULT STE. MARIE - Two Laker men placed in the top five, and three landed among the top 11 finishers at the Lake Superior Challenge Cross Country Meet held Saturday.

Freshman Taylor Heath placed third in 16:25.4, and senior Lucas Pease was fifth in 16:31.8. Another rookie, Mark List, was 11th in 17:01.1.

"Taylor and Lucas were in good company as Brian, the overall winner from Tech, was first-team all-region last year and just barely missed qualifying for the national meet," LSSU coach Steve Eles said. "For Taylor as a freshman to keep Brian in sight was very impressive...The meet was dominated by great freshman performances."

LSSU's top seven men were: 17. Jeff Kuhl, 17:11.7; 19. Mackenzie Oglesby, 17:25.4; 20. Matthew Regal, 17:26.3; 25. Jacob Brushaber, 17:35.2.

Senior Kayla Nowak led the Lake Superior State women by placing 26th in 21:28.5. Freshman Kelsey Lewis was 28th in 21:53.5, followed by junior Jamie Wick, who was 29th in 22:20.0.

"Several of our women ran well," Eles said. "We need to work on getting the rest of our women's team healthy. We only ran seven runners today because of injuries and illnesses."

LSSU's top seven women included: 33. Charity Hensen, 23:40.9; 36. Elizabeth Dachs, 24:02.1; 38. Sarah Schultz, 25:36.7; 39. Sara Rewa, 28:24.1.

Michigan Tech's Brian Stetter won the men's race in 16:03.9, while the Huskies' Deedra Irwin took the women's title in 19:00.0. Northwood and Northern Michigan also competed in the meet.

"We were fortunate to sneak the races in before it started to rain," added Elles, whose team competes at Calvin College next Saturday. "The weather conditions were great for cross country."
