LSSU basketball teams to play final regular-season home games against MTU and NMU

SAULT STE. MARIE - The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference North Division champion Lake Superior State men's basketball team will work to maintain its top-eight standing in the NCAA Midwest Region during the final week of the regular season.
The Lakers (19-6 overall, 16-4 GLIAC) play host to Michigan Tech at 7:30 p.m. Thursday and Northern Michigan at 3 p.m. Saturday at Cooper Gymnasium. The LSSU women (15-13 overall, 8-12 GLIAC) also play the Huskies at 5:30 p.m. Thursday and the Wildcats at 1 p.m. Saturday, and most-likely need to win one of those games in order to earn a berth in next week's GLIAC Tournament.
All four games will be broadcast live on WSOO 1230 AM, and a pay-per-view video feed is available on the B2 Network. Several special events will take place Saturday, including Laker Basketball Alumni Weekend, NCAA Take a Kid to the Game Day and senior tributes.
All children age 14 and under will be admitted Saturday for free if accompanied by an adult who purchases a ticket. Seniors Jaclyn Armstrong, Annie Dkyhouse, Alyssa VanderWal, Anthony Gibson, Mike Rader, Tim VanOudheusden, Ryan Kuhl and Mark Morse will be honored between games.
The Laker men, winners of seven straight games, are ranked sixth in the NCAA Midwest Region poll and need to remain in the top eight in order to receive an NCAA Tournament bid. They have already clinched their first GLIAC North Division title since the league split into divisions in 1996-97 and earned the opportunity to host the first round of the playoffs on March 3.
In January, the LSSU men defeated Michigan Tech, 58-51, and Northern Michigan, 76-61. Senior forward Tim VanOudheusden scored a career-high 29 points against the Wildcats and averaged 23.5 points per game that week. The Lakers' defense held the Huskies to 29 percent from the field. MTU (12-13 overall, 9-11 GLIAC) needs to win at least one of its last two games in order to make the GLIAC Tournament, while NMU (11-14 overall, 6-14 GLIAC) is out of the race.
The LSSU women are in a three-way tie for seventh place in the GLIAC with NMU (13-12 overall, 8-12 GLIAC) and Findlay. Michigan Tech (20-5 overall, 17-3 GLIAC) already clinched the North Division title and is playing for the chance to host the GLIAC Final Four and potentially the regional tournament. The Huskies now share the top spot in the GLIAC with Hillsdale after losing 98-91 to the Chargers last Saturday in Houghton. NMU hurt its cause by losing 76-71 to Findlay last Saturday - two days after upsetting Hillsdale, 69-68.
LSSU beat NMU 71-58 on Jan. 22 and lost 74-56 at MTU on Jan. 24. The Huskies held Armstrong, the No. 2 scorer in the GLIAC, to nine points and one rebound in that contest. They lead the GLIAC in scoring defense (58.2) and three-point field-goal percentage (.421).
