Lakers cruise to a non-conference win


SAULT STE. MARIE - The Lake Superior State men's basketball team polished off a busy November schedule with an 81-53 non-conference victory over Northland Baptist on Tuesday at Bud Cooper Gymnasium.

The Lakers (2-1) are idle until their Dec. 4 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener at Hillsdale. Their next home game is Dec. 8 against Finlandia.

LSSU out-rebounded Northland Baptist 42-23 and outscored the Pioneers 18-9 on second-chance baskets. Senior center Ryan Kuhl led the Lakers with 15 points and six rebounds, while Tim VanOudheusden had 12 points and three assists. Mark Morse added 11 points and three steals. Nathan Householder totaled nine points and five rebounds.

Garrett Konuszewski and Kyle Hunt also had three steals each for the Lakers, who scored 39 points on NBBC's 22 turnovers.

LSSU led 40-28 at halftime. The Lakers shot 44.3 percent from the field and made 22-of-24 free throws.

Northland Baptist (2-2) shot 36.2 percent from the field and was 14-of-16 at the free-throw line. Joel Widmer led NBBC with 17 points.
