Lakers receive NCAA bid


INDIANAPOLIS - The Lake Superior State men's basketball team has been awarded a bid to the 2009 NCAA Division II Tournament and will play Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament champion Northern Kentucky in the first round of the Midwest Regional.

LSSU (21-8) is the region's No. 6 seed, while NKU (24-6) earned the No. 3 seed. They will open the tournament at noon Saturday in Findlay, Ohio.

The Norse defeated Bellarmine 69-47 in the GLVC Tournament finals to earn an automatic bid.

No. 1 Findlay (30-0) will be the host team and play No. 8 Grand Valley State (21-8) in a rematch of Saturday's Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament final. No. 2 Kentucky Wesleyan will face No. 7 Bellarmine, and No. 4 Southern Indiana will take on No. 5 Rockhurst.

Lake Superior State, under second-year head coach Steve Hettinga, is making its second NCAA Tournament appearance. The Lakers also participated in the 1996 national tournament.

The NCAA Midwest Regional will be held March 14, 15 and 17. More information will follow.
