Lakers slide into GLIAC North Division top spot

BIG RAPIDS - Lake Superior State not only defeated Ferris State 81-55 Thursday to move into first place in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference North Division standings, but won handily on the road.

Sophomore guard Kyle Hunt scored a season-high 21 points, senior guard Garrett Konuszewski tied his season high with 17 points, and freshman forward Derek Kinney scored 11 points and totaled a season-high nine rebounds for the Lakers (8-4 overall, 6-1 GLIAC).

Senior guard Scott Perkins also had a big night with 18 points and five assists.

After trailing 29-28 at halftime, the Lakers shot 64 percent in the second half and held the Bulldogs to six field goals. They built a 10-point lead within the first five minutes of the second half and enjoyed a comfortable 60-43 lead with 7:21 remaining.

LSSU shot 47.3 percent from the field for the game, including 10-of-28 from three-point range. Konuszewski and Perkins were a combined 8-of-15 from behind the arc.

Hunt was 10-of-11 at the line as the Lakers made 19-of-26 free throws. LSSU dominated the boards, 47-32.

Darien Gray scored 15 points to lead Ferris State (6-5 overall, 4-2 GLIAC). The Bulldogs shot 29.6 percent from the field, including 7-of-22 from three-point range. They made 16-of-26 free throws.

LSSU plays at 3 p.m. Saturday at Grand Valley State. GVSU is one game behind Lake Superior State in the standings.
