LSSU was tested early, beating No. 25 Philadelphia 59-57 and losing to No. 3 Southwest Baptist, 96-71. The Lakers also lost to St. Leo, 86-78.

Perkins and junior guard Micah Hudson, who averaged 10.0 ppg, combined to shoot 26-of-56 from the field (.464). Sophomore guard Kyle Hunt averaged 13.3 points per game, while senior guard Garrett Konuszewski chipped in 11.3 ppg. Opponents shot a combined 50.9 percent from the field and out-rebounded LSSU by an average of 2.3 rebounds per game.

Aquinas lost 66-56 to Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rival Ferris State in a season-opening exhibition game. FSU was picked to finish second behind Grand Valley State in the GLIAC North Division Pre-Season Poll, while defending champion LSSU was picked to finish third.
