Huskies shut down LSSU
HOUGHTON - Michigan Tech overcame a seven-point deficit during the final seven minutes of Thursday's Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's basketball game to win 61-58 and knock Lake Superior State out of contention for home-court advantage during the quarterfinal round of next week's GLIAC Tournament.
With the loss, LSSU (13-13 overall, 11-10 GLIAC) trails second-place Ferris State by two games. The Lakers are one game behind third-place Saginaw Valley State heading into Saturday's regular-season finale at 1 p.m. at Northern Michigan.
Michigan Tech (9-17 overall, 8-13 GLIAC), which is 5-2 in its last seven games, failed to make the GLIAC Tournament field, but is playing a role in determining which North Division teams will host first-round games. As of Thursday, the Lakers would travel to Grand Valley State.
Senior Garrett Konuszewski made a lay-up for a 52-45 LSSU lead with 7:02 remaining. Michigan Tech scored nine straight points during the next 3:05 to go ahead 54-52.
The game was tied 56-56 with 2:22 to go. LSSU was 0-for-4 from the field with three missed three-point attempts and had a turnover as Michigan Tech scored on three possessions down the stretch.
Senior Scott Perkins totaled 25 points to lead all scorers, but he was the only Laker in double figures. LSSU shot 38.3 percent from the field, including 5-of-28 from three-point range, and made 7-of-10 free throws.
Ali Haidar totaled 20 points and 10 rebounds to lead Michigan Tech, which shot 36.2 percent from the field, including 8-of-21 from behind the arc. The Huskies were 11-of-21 at the free-throw line and out-rebounded LSSU, 46-37.
