Lakers and Oilers split series
FINDLAY, Ohio - For the second time this season, the Findlay vs. Lake Superior State men's basketball game was a showdown between Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year candidates Scott Perkins and Marcus Parker.
LSSU's Perkins scored 24 points and UF's Parker 13 as the Lakers claimed a six-point win during Game 1 in December.
In the rematch Thursday in front of 1,240 fans in Findlay, Ohio, Parker scored a career-high 29 points to lead UF to an 80-65 win. Perkins finished with an impressive 27, but didn't have as much scoring support.
Parker hit two three-pointers during an 18-4 Findlay run that enabled the Oilers to pull away from a 36-36 tie early in the second half. Findlay's biggest lead of the game was 16 points, 62-46, with 6:53 remaining.
Perkins made two three-pointers and Micah Hudson had one as LSSU (11-7 overall, 9-4 GLIAC) cut it to nine, 71-62, with 2:26 to go. Hudson finished with 12 points, and Garrett Konuszewski had 13.
Lake Superior State shot 38.5 percent from the field, including 11-of-28 from three-point range, and made 14-of-20 free throws. The Lakers held a 33-32 rebounding edge, but totaled an uncharacteristic 16 turnovers to UF's nine.
Nathan Hyde scored 12 points and Aaron Robinson had 11 for Findlay (15-3 overall, 11-2 GLIAC), which is the GLIAC South Division's top team. The Oilers shot 45.8 percent from the field, including 9-of-19 from three-point range, and made 27-of-34 free throws.
LSSU starters Justin Williams and Kyle Hunt, along with Hudson all fouled out.
LSSU, which is ranked sixth in this week's NCAA Midwest Region Poll, plays at 3 p.m. Saturday at Hillsdale.
