WSU's second half sinks Lakers
DETROIT - Wayne State took advantage of Lake Superior State's first-half foul trouble and got 19 points in the second half from Bryan Wright to beat the Lakers 73-61 Saturday at Matthaei Gymnasium.
WSU (8-6 overall, 6-4 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) and LSSU (9-6 overall, 7-3 GLIAC) both remain in second place in their respective divisions. The Lakers finished their five-game road stretch with a 3-2 mark and play host to Northern Michigan at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
The Warriors rallied back from a six-point deficit to tie the game, 30-30, at halftime. LSSU starters Derek Kinney, Justin Williams and Scott Perkins were on the bench with two fouls each during the final two minutes of the period. Perkisn sat out the final 3:34 of the first half.
Wright took over the game in the second half, hitting 5-of-7 from the field including four three-pointers and making 5-of-6 free throws. He led the game with 25 points, while teammate Jerry Oden totaled 20 points and 11 rebounds. Oden scored 12 points in the second half, during which the Warriors shot 53.6 percent from the field and held LSSU to eight field goals.
Garrett Konuszewski scored 13 points and Perkins added 12 to lead Lake Superior State. Kyle Hunt and Mike Boylan added eight points each, and Hunt led the Lakers in rebounds with six.
LSSU shot 37.5 percent from the field, including 8-of-24 from three-point range. The Lakers made 11-of-12 free throws.
WSU shot 49.1 percent from the field for the game, including 6-of-16 from behind the arc, and was 15-of-21 at the free-throw line. The Warriors out-rebounded the Lakers, 34-33.
