Pay tribute on Bud Cooper on Sept. 10
SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Lake Superior State University and the
Sault Ste. Marie community lost a longtime friend and tremendous
supporter with the passing of Ronald "Bud" Cooper last November. Now, a
celebration of Cooper’s life and his legacy will take place Sept.
10-11.
The two-day observance begins at 6 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 10, with a
program at the James Norris Center in the gymnasium that bears Cooper’s
name. A slate of speakers, including retired Michigan State University
Director of Athletics Ron Mason and other special guests, will discuss
Bud's life, his work, and his accomplishments at LSSU and in the
Sault.
As part of the two-day celebration, the City of Sault Ste. Marie,
during its regular meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 7, will declare Friday,
Sept. 10, 2010, as Bud Cooper Day.
"We hope many in the community will join us as we gather to
remember, honor and celebrate one of our greatest advocates and a
special person who was well-loved in the community," said Tom Coates,
executive director of the LSSU Foundation. "We have room for a lot of
people in the Cooper Gym. We are also inviting everyone to continue the
celebration on Saturday at the Sault Ste. Marie Country Club as we
assemble for a game of golf and some reminiscing on the day that has
traditionally been dedicated to the Bud Cooper Classic."
The golf outing has tee times available from 10 a.m. until noon. A
social gathering will follow. For tee times, call the Sault Country
Club at 632-7812.
Saturday's golf outing will be one more chance for Cooper Classic
enthusiasts to get together on the greens, but the legacy created by
the former tournament will continue.
"It is the family's request that future fundraising efforts in Bud's memory be
directed to the Cooper Endowed
Award. This endowment is awarded to athletes from each of the non-fully
funded division II women’s athletic programs, and plans are to expand
its use in both women's and men's division II programs,"
Coates said.
"Our entire department is so grateful for everything Mr. Cooper has
done to advance our programs," said Kris Dunbar, LSSU Director of
Athletics. "We want his memorial to be as special as he was to Lake
Superior State University and we hope the community will take some time
on a Friday evening to join us for this program."
Memorial gifts to the Bud Cooper Endowed Award may be directed to
the LSSU Foundation, 650 W. Easterday Avenue, Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.,
49783 or online via the LSSU
Foundation.
