Huskies split regular-season series with Laker men
SAULT STE. MARIE - Michigan Tech defeated Lake Superior State 78-62 Saturday at Bud Cooper Gymnasium to avenge a mid-January home-court loss. The Huskies held the Laker men's basketball team to their second-lowest field-goal percentage of the season.
Justin Williams was 7-of-9 from the field and 5-of-6 at the free-throw line, and totaled 19 points and five rebounds to lead LSSU (14-9 overall, 8-8 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference). He was the only Laker starter to shoot 50 percent or better from the field.
Starters Micah Hudson and Khalid Wells scored 11 points each, and Derek Billing had nine for the Lakers. Andrew Charlesworth came off the bench and contributed seven points.
LSSU shot 35.5 percent from the field, including 6-of-20 from three-point range. The Lakers were 12-of-20 at the free-throw line for 60 percent.
MTU's Ali Haidar, who matched up with Williams in the post, also totaled 19 points and five rebounds. He was one of four Huskies in double figures. Mike Hojnacki added 18 points.
Michigan Tech 12-10 overall, 7-8 GLIAC), a 62-61 loser at home to LSSU, shot 55.8 percent from the field, including 5-of-10 from behind the arc. The Huskies made 25-of-29 free throws and out-rebounded the Lakers, 35-30. They led 31-23 at halftime.
LSSU is currently third in the GLIAC North Division with a half-game lead over Michigan Tech and Saginaw Valley State. The Lakers' play a home game at 1 p.m. next Saturday against Northwood.
