Lakers topple Northland International during home opener

SAULT STE. MARIE - Freshman Cameron Metz and sophomore Derek Kinney scored 20 points each as Lake Superior State cruised to a 90-35 men's basketball victory over Northland International during Tuesday's home opener at Cooper Gymnasium.

Metz and Kinney both came off the bench for the Lakers (2-1). For Kinney, it was a career high. Starter Justin Williams finished with 10 points and was the only other LSSU player in double figures. Williams and Kinney led in rebounds with six each, while Metz had three blocked shots.

LSSU, which led 41-18 at halftime, shot 62.3 percent from the field, including 5-of-11 from three-point range. The Lakers made 19-of-27 free throws and dominated the boards, 44-29. Eleven players scored for LSSU.

Seth Quirey led Northland International (1-4) with 12 points and six rebounds. The Pioneers shot 21.7 percent from the field and made 4-of-7 free throws.

LSSU plays another non-conference game against Finlandia at 6 p.m. Friday at Michigan Tech.

Note: Senior guard Micah Hudson was named Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference North Division Player of the Week today after averaging 19.5 points and seven rebounds per game during last weekend's split against Great Lakes Valley Conference opponents Illinois-Springfield and Missouri-St. Louis. Hudson shot 40 percent from the field and 91.7 percent at the foul line.
