Lakers lose opener at UIS
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - Senior guard Micah Hudson totaled 26 points and 13 rebounds for the Lake Superior State men's basketball team, which lost Friday's season opener at Illinois-Springfield, 67-66.
Kyle Hunt and Andrew Charlesworth scored nine points each, and Justin Williams added six points and 10 rebounds for the Lakers (0-1). It was the first meeting ever for the two regional opponents.
Chigozie Umeadi totaled 18 points and eight rebounds for Illinois-Springfield (1-0).
UIS led 34-31 at halftime and extended its lead to 10 points, 53-43, with 8:18 remaining. The Prairiestars maintained their lead until Hudson hit two three-pointers and Charlesworth made one during the final 1:46. Hudson rebounded a UIS miss, which led to a layup by LSSU's Khalid Wells for a 66-65 Laker lead with three seconds left. Brandon Farmer of UIS made a game-winning basket with one second to go.
LSSU shot 40.8 percent from the field, including 9-of-25 from three-point range. The Lakers made 17-of-25 free throws.
UIS shot 37.5 percent from the field, including 7-of-28 from behind the arc. The Prairiestars made 12-of-20 free throws.
LSSU plays at Missouri-St. Louis on Saturday.
