Former CMU standout Tim Kisner is named assistant men's basketball coach
SAULT STE. MARIE – Tim Kisner, who was the first point guard to total 1,000 career points and 400 assists at Central Michigan University, has been named assistant men’s basketball coach at Lake Superior State.
Kisner followed a Mid American Conference regular-season championship season at CMU by playing two seasons in the now-defunct Continental Basketball Association, three in Finland and two in Poland. He was part of national championship teams in both European leagues and was the first American player to be named captain for a game in Poland. He played over 350 professional games in seven countries before retiring as player in 2008.
“I enjoyed the history and culture, although it took some getting used to,” Kisner said of his overseas experiences. “I’d like to do it again, maybe as a coach.”
After returning to Michigan, Kisner served as director of athletics and varsity basketball coach at Tri County High School in Howard City. Serving under LSSU coach Steve Hettinga will be his first stint as a collegiate coach.
“I always wanted to be a college coach and the opportunity presented itself,” Kisner said. “I met the guys, and everyone is excited, working hard and getting after it.”
“Tim is a Michigan guy, which is great for recruiting,” Hettinga said. “He has a lot of contacts from his experiences in the Grand Rapids area and from being such a successful player. He brings a vast amount of experience as far as being someone who has played professionally and seen so many different levels of basketball. He knows a lot of people from playing and being a high school coach in Grand Rapids. He already knows a lot of the players we’re recruiting, so it’s a natural fit for us.”
Kisner was told over the years that he would make a good college coach, and Hettinga believes LSSU is just the place for him to get his start. He looks forward to building lifelong relationships with his players like he did with his coaches when he wore a Chippewas uniform.
“I think that even more so today, kids want to know how much you care about them,” Kisner noted. “I had assistant coaches with whom I am still close today.”
Kisner will be involved in all aspects of the coaching process. Hettinga is eager to have him work with point guards Derek Billing, who is a sophomore, along with Tony Harris and Quay Wilson, who are freshmen.
“He will be great for the development of our point guards,” Hettinga said. “He’s considered a very smart basketball player and has a good feel for the game.”
Kisner replaces Chris Thomas, who was with the Lakers for one season.
