Metz and Billing score 19 each during Lakers' exhibition victory

SAULT STE. MARIE - Sophomores Cameron Metz and Derek Billing scored 19 points each to lead the Lake Superior State men's basketball team to a 90-68 exhibition victory over Grace Bible College Friday at Bud Cooper Gymnasium.

Junior Derek Kinney turned in a double double with 17 points and 10 rebounds, and senior Kyle Hunt added 13 points during his first game back after suffering a season-ending injury on Jan. 22, 2011.

The game was an official contest for Grace Bible College, but does not count in the win-loss column for LSSU. GBC is the three-time defending national champion in NCCAA II (National Christian College Athletic Association).

Both teams endured cold shooting during the first half, which LSSU led 44-30 thanks to a 13-point effort by Kinney. The Lakers shot 52.9 percent from the field during the second half, making 18-of-34 field goals. Metz scored 11 second-half points, and Billing added 13. Billing was 5-of-10 from three-point range for the game.

Metz finished with seven rebounds, while freshman Alex Williams had three steals. Hunt led in assists with nine, followed by Billing with seven.

Ryan Krombeen scored 15 points to lead Grace Bible College.

LSSU officially opens its season Nov. 11 against Missouri-St. Louis. The game will be played in Midland, Mich.
