Laker men finish 2-0 at Timberwolf Classic

MIDLAND - The Lake Superior State men's basketball team finished 2-0 at the Timberwolf Classic hosted by Northwood University after beating Illinois-Springfield 74-66 Saturday.

Kyle Hunt led the Lakers with 19 points and five assists, while Derek Kinney turned in 11 points and 14 rebounds. Alex Williams scored 11 points, and Derek Billing added eight points, seven assists and three steals.

LSSU shot 45 percent from the field, making 6-of-16 three-point attempts. The Lakers made 14-of-23 free throws.

Kyle Gupton scored 18 points, and West Dawson added 11 points and 13 rebounds to lead Illinois-Springfield. UIS shot 37.9 percent from the field, including 4-of-19 from behind the arc, and made 18-of-26 free throws.

LSSU led 36-34 at halftime.

The Lakers play host to Alma in a non-conference game at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Bud Cooper Gymnasium.
