St. Joseph's outlasts Laker men in double overtime
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Lake Superior State made clutch shots at the end of regulation and at the end of the first overtime to extend Saturday's men's basketball game against St. Joseph's, but couldn't overcome foul trouble during the second overtime and lost 99-92 during the second round of the Nicoson Classic.
Senior guard Kyle Hunt made a three-pointer at the second-half buzzer to tie the score 74-74. Junior forward Derek Kinney converted a three-point play with five seconds left in the first overtime, giving the Lakers (5-2) an 85-84 lead, but the Pumas (3-1) got a chance to shoot free throws with one second to go and made 1-of-2, tying it 85-85.
St. Joseph's Michael Lipton opened the second overtime with a three-pointer, and the Pumas' Corey Clifton made another three-pointer at 2:58, giving his team an insurmountable 93-87 lead.
Hunt, who led the Lakers with 27 points, fouled out with 3:01 remaining and St. Joseph leading 90-87. LSSU also lost starting center Cameron Metz at the 4:15 mark of the first overtime and point guard Derek Billing with 14 seconds remaining in the game.
St. Joseph's, whose only loss was by three points to Hillsdale to open the season, totaled 30 fouls to LSSU's 26, but only one player fouled out for the Pumas.
Kinney finished with 17 points and a team-high six rebounds, and Metz totaled 12 points. LSSU shot 42.5 percent from the field for the game, including 3-of-16 from three-point range. The Lakers made 27-of-34 free throws.
Phillip Collins totaled 23 points, nine rebounds and five assists to lead five St. Joseph scorers in double figures. Clifton added 18 points and six rebounds. The Pumas out-rebounded LSSU, 46-35. They shot 44.8 percent from the field, including 12-of-21 from behind the arc, and made 27-of-33 free throws.
