107 wins and counting for LSSU coach Steve Hettinga

SAULT STE. MARIE – Steve Hettinga became Lake Superior State’s all-time leader in men’s basketball wins when the Lakers won 75-70 at Ferris State on Saturday.

Midway through his seventh season, Hettinga is 107-82 (.566) at LSSU. He has a 15-year career coaching record of 202-189 (.517), and that includes a head-coaching stint at Olivet.

Hettinga surpassed the former mark of 106-62 set by Jack Brighton from 1963-70. He also has the Lakers’ best win percentage since Ed Douma set the school-record mark of .773 (85-25) from 1974-78.

The 2013-14 Lakers are 17-3 overall and 9-3 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. They share the GLIAC North Division lead with Northwood heading into this week's games at Northern Michigan and Michigan Tech.
