SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich.—The Lake Superiors State men's basketball kicks off its 2017-2018 regular season this weekend hitting the road for a pair of non-conference games at the Battler Classic at Wayne State University in Detroit.
The Lakers are set to tip off with Kentucky Wesleyan Saturday at 6 p.m. and will wrap up on Sunday (1 p.m.) with Alderson Broaddus.
Lead by head coach Steve Hettinga, who begins his 11th season with the program, LSSU enters the season ranked No.2 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Men's Basketball Preseason Coaches' Poll.
Lake State is coming off a 16-10 (13-8 in GLIAC) season and will be seeking their fourth NCAA tournament appearance under Hettinga's watch.
Kentucky Wesleyan (1-1 overall) presents a big challenge for the Lakers as they enter the season as the No.24-ranked team in the nation and are the defending Great Midwest Conference Champions.
On Sunday, LSSU will face and Alderson Broaddus team that was pick fourth in the GMAC preseason coaches' poll a fell to KWU in last year's GMAC final.
After this weekend action, the Lakers will remain on the road competing in the Cerdarville Don Callan Classic Nov.17-18.
