Laker hockey players recieve CCHA recognition
FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. - Four Lake Superior State hockey players received post-season recognition from the Central Collegiate Hockey Association.
Sophomore forward Rick Schofield (Pickering, Ont.) was LSSU's nominee for the CCHA Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award. Schofield played in 36 games in the 2008-09 season and totaled nine goals and 12 assists. He led the Lakers in plus-minus at +14, and was named CCHA Offensive Player of the Week and received RBC Financial Group Player of the Month Special Mention in January.
Freshman forward Fred Cassiani (Toronto, Ont.) received honorable mention on the 2008-09 CCHA All-Rookie Team. Cassiani totaled 11 goals and 10 assists in 39 games. He was named CCHA Rookie of the Week and CCHA Rookie of the Month Special Mention in December. He is tied for eighth in the CCHA in freshman scoring. He was also ranked fifth at LSSU in points and tied for third in goals.
Junior defenseman Steven Kaunisto (Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.) received votes for the CCHA 2008-09 All-Conference Team. Kaunisto totaled three goals and 17 assists in 37 games. He is tied for 12th in the CCHA in points by a defenseman.
Junior forward Nathan Perkovich (Canton, Mich.) was LSSU's leading vote getter and ranked 23 in the CCHA in the Perani Cup Three-Star Standings with 18 points. Perkovich played in 35 games in the 2008-09 season and totaled 12 goals and 12 assists. He scored seven power play goals to lead the Lakers and rank ninth in the CCHA.
Perkovich and Schofield will be recognized at the 2009 CCHA Awards on Thursday, March 19, at the Fox Theatre in Detroit.
