Schofield scores twice during Blue-White Game
SAULT STE. MARIE - Sophomore forward Rick Schofield scored the game-tying goal and an empty-netter to lead the Blue Team to a 3-1 victory over the White Team during the annual Lake Superior State hockey season-opening scrimmage held Saturday at Taffy Abel Arena.
The Lakers, including seven walk-on candidates, played two 25-minute stop-time halves.
Schofield's first goal at 23:14 of the first half tied the game, 1-1. Walk-on candidate Kyle Waisanen had the only assist on the rebound goal, which was scored after Schofield won a faceoff in front White goaltender Mitch Edmondson.
Junior John Scrymgeour tallied the game-winning goal for the Blue Team 32 seconds into the second half. Freshman Fred Cassiani had the only assist. Schofield added an empty-net goal at 24:33 as freshman Kyle Haines picked up an assist.
Junior Simon Gysbers scored the White Team's lone goal during a power play at 8:19 of the first period.
For the White Team, Edmondson totaled 22 saves during the first half, and sophomore Brian Mahoney-Wilson had 14 saves and allowed one goal during the second half.
For the Blue Team, walk-on candidate Mitch Zorzit stopped 13 of 14 shots on goal, while junior Pat Inglis stopped all seven shots he faced.
The Lakers officially open their season at 7:05 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 10, at Taffy Abel Arena. They take on Minnesota-Duluth during the first round of the second annual Superior Cup, then meet Michigan Tech at 7:05 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11.
