Lakers bury Raiders in Game 2 to salvage split
HAMILTON, N.Y. - Lake Superior State pounded Colgate with a season-high 54 shots on goal, and sophomore goaltender Brian Mahoney-Wilson totaled a season-high 38 saves as the Lakers beat Colgate 6-1 Friday to salvage a split in the non-conference road series.
LSSU (6-9-7 overall) beat the Raiders in Hamilton, N.Y., for the first time in six tries. Rick Schofield and Chad Nehring scored to goals each to lead the Lakers, who avenged Thursday's 5-4 overtime loss.
Schofield scored the only goal of the first period at 2:05. Josh Sim, Nehring and Will Acton scored during an 8:25 span late in the second period to give the Lakers a 4-0 lead. Sim, who tallied a power-play goal, and Nehring struck 15 seconds apart midway through the stanza. Acton added a power-play goal at 19:10.
LSSU, which went into the game averaging only 0.7 goals per game in the second period, out-shot Colgate 26-12 in that period.
Colgate's Jason Fredricks scored his third goal of the series to trim the lead to 4-1 with 25 seconds remaining the second period.
Nehring put the game out of reach with his second goal of the game, scored at 4:16 of the third period. Schofield rounded out the scoring at 11:46.
Troy Schwab was credited with assists on LSSU's first two goals, and he moved within two points of the 100-point career scoring milestone. Steven Oleksy assisted on Nehring's first goal and followed with an assist on Acton's power-play goal. Zac MacVoy, Nathan Perkovich, Steven Kaunisto, Dan Barczuk, Carter Lee and Sim also picked up assists for the night.
LSSU finished 2-for-6 on the power play with all six man-advantage opportunities occurring in the second period. Colgate (6-9-5) was 0-for-4 on the power play for the game.
Mahoney-Wilson improved his season record to 5-6-5. Colgate starting goalie Alex Evin allowed three goals and totaled 28 saves through 31 minutes. Charles Long allowed two goals and had 14 saves. Brian Bessette gave up one goal and had six saves during the final 10:06.
LSSU returns home to play No. 1-ranked Notre Dame at 7:05 p.m. on Jan. 16-17.
