Lakers improve Friday CCHA record 3-0
SAULT STE. MARIE - Sophomore goaltender Brian Mahoney-Wilson stopped all 28 shots on goal to lead the Lake Superior State hockey team to a 2-0 victory over Bowling Green State and record his first collegiate shutout.
Mahoney-Wilson is the first Laker netminder to record a shutout since Jeff Jakaitis on Dec. 1, 2006.
The Lakers (3-3-1 overall, 3-2-0 Central Collegiate Hockey Association) improved to 3-0 during Friday night league games. They will go for their first CCHA Saturday victory when they play the Falcons at 7:05 p.m. tomorrow night.
Senior Josh Sim knocked in a rebound at 1:17 of the first period to give LSSU an early 1-0 lead. Fellow senior Troy Schwab took the original shot and was credited with the assist on Sim's first goal of the season.
The one-goal lead stood despite the Lakers having to kill off three first-period penalties. LSSU was scoreless during three second-period power plays.
In the third period, BGSU (3-5-1 overall, 2-3-0 in the CCHA) was 0-for-2 on the power play, while LSSU was 0-for-1. LSSU's second goal was an even-strength marker as Laker junior and points leader Zac MacVoy scored at 9:17. Rick Schofield and Simon Gysbers had the assists.
MacVoy, who has at least a point in every game in which he has played this season, heads into Saturday's contest with five goals and four assists.
The Falcons played most of the final two minutes of regulation with goaltender Jimmy Spratt pulled in favor of an extra attacker. Spratt returned to his position at 19:49 when teammate Brandon Svendsen was called for slashing. The late power play secured LSSU's victory.
Spratt totaled 18 saves.
