LSSU ties at UND and loses shootout

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - Lake Superior State's fate was decided by a shootout for the second time in as many games, and the Lakers came out on the losing end of the extra session after tying ninth-ranked Notre Dame 3-3 during regulation Friday.

Steven Kaunisto scored the only double-overtime goal for LSSU, which is now 1-1 in Central Collegiate Hockey Association shootouts. He also had a goal during last week's shootout victory over Bowling Green State. Lakers Rick Schofield, Troy Schwab and Nathan Perkovich failed to score on their attempts. Billy Maday scored during Notre Dame's third attempt, and Calle Ridderwall secured the extra point in the standings on UND's fourth attempt.

Lake Superior State (3-3-3 overall, 3-2-2-1 CCHA) scored two power-play goals during the first three minutes of the second period to come back from a 1-0 first-period deficit. Defenseman Simon Gysbers tied it, 1-1, at :55, and Perkovich made it 2-1 at 3:03.

Junior Zac MacVoy and sophomore Matt Cowie assisted on Gysbers' goal, and MacVoy extended his point-scoring streak to nine games with his sixth assist of the season. Kaunisto had the only assist on Perkovich's goal to also increase his assist total to six, which leads the team.

Notre Dame's Ben Ryan evened the score at 2-2 with an even-strength goal at 5:36 of the second period.

The game remained tied, 2-2, until Laker Josh Sim scored on an assist from Fred Cassiani at 9:17 of the third period. Notre Dame's Ryan Guentzel answered 65 seconds later.
