Bulldogs break 2-2 tie with shootout victory

SAULT STE. MARIE - Minnesota-Duluth came back from a 2-0 deficit to tie the Lake Superior State hockey team, 2-2, Friday at Taffy Abel Arena, then won the first shootout in recent Laker hockey history.

UMD's Justin Fontaine scored the game's only shootout goal. Officially, the game will be recorded as a 2-2 tie.

LSSU resumes action in the second annual Superior Cup at 7:05 p.m. Saturday at home against Michigan Tech. In the other Superior Cup contest held Friday, Northern Michigan defeated Michigan Tech, 5-2.

Despite giving up the two-goal lead, LSSU (0-0-1) made an early statement with its special teams, scoring during two of its first three power plays and limiting the Bulldogs to two power-play goals on 10 chances. UMD's game-tying goal was a 5-on-3 power-play goal at 2:17 of the third period. LSSU played short-handed during most of the final three minutes of overtime and were two men down for 65 seconds.

LSSU sophomore Tyson Hobbins scored a power-play goal at 2:07 of the first period. Will Acton and Rick Schofield drew assists. Simon Gysbers made it 2-0 with a power-play goal at 16:10 of the opening period. Steve Kaunisto and Zac MacVoy were credited with assists.

LSSU was 0-for-4 on the power play during the final three periods and 2-for-7 for the game.

UMD's MacGregor Sharp and Josh Meyers scored power-play goals at 9:17 of the second period and 2:17 of the third period, respectively.

LSSU junior goaltender Pat Inglis was stellar during overtime, stopping three shots in traffic during the Bulldogs' 5-on-3 power play. He totaled 29 saves, including nine in the first period, nine in the second and six in overtime.

UMD goaltender Alex Stalock totaled 24 saves, including 14 in the third period.
