Lakers shut out Windsor
SAULT STE. MARIE - Lake Superior State's defense made sure that junior goaltender Mitch Edmondson's first collegiate start was a memorable one.
The Lakers held exhibition opponent Windsor to nine shots on goal on their way to winning 7-0 Saturday at Taffy Abel Arena. Fred Cassiani had two goals and an assist, and Brad Cooper notched four assists to lead the LSSU offense. Five different Lakers scored goals.
Edmondson totaled three saves in the first period and six in the second during the shutout victory. LSSU out-shot Windsor 12-0 in the third period and 45-9 for the game.
Windsor dropped to 0-3 against Central Collegiate Hockey Association opponents.
LSSU started out 1-for-1 on the power play as Will Acton scored at 9:39 of the first period. Cooper and Rick Schofield drew the assists.
Kyle Haines made it 2-0 with an even-strength goal at 3:30 of the second period. Cassiani had the lone assist.
Cassiani made it 4-0 with two goals during a 20-second span midway through the second period. Cooper assisted on both goals. Simon Gysbers added an assist on Cassiani's first goal at 10:39.
Acton tallied another power-play goal at 19:35 of the second period. Matt Cowie and Cooper had assists.
Nathan Perkovich added a power-play goal at 10:29 of the third period as LSSU finished 3-for-6 with the man-advantage. Schofield and Tyson Hobbins assisted on the play.
Steve Oleksy finished off the scoring with an even-strength goal at 18:21. John Scrymgeour had the only assist.
Windsor finished 0-for-5 on the power play. Lancers starting goalie Jim Watt gave up three goals and totaled 22 saves through 30:39. Frank Dayus allowed four goals and had 16 saves during the final 29:21.
LSSU plays the U.S. National Team Development Program's Under-18 team in another exhibition game at 1:05 p.m. Sunday at Taffy Abel Arena.
