Lakers hit two posts during shootout loss at Wisconsin

MADISON, Wis. - Lake Superior State nearly spoiled Wisconsin's attempt to win its 10th Badger Showdown title, but the host team hung on thanks to two posts and good timing.

After scoring the game-tying goal with 1:43 remaining in regulation and shutting out the Lakers in overtime, Wisconsin claimed a 1-0 shootout victory during Sunday's championship game of the 20th annual Badger Showdown played in front of 13,422 fans.

Tom Gorowsky scored U-W's only shootout goal during the Badger's first attempt. Lakers Steven Kaunisto and Rick Schofield both hit the post on their attempts, and Troy Schwab's shot was declared a "no goal" after an official's review. Wisconsin goaltender Shane Connolly reportedly had the puck in his glove and dropped it behind the goal line after the official waved off Schwab's attempt.

Although both goaltenders were outstanding, goalposts at both ends of the rink played a role in the game's outcome. Wisconsin hit the post twice while out-shooting Lake Superior State 10-8 in the first period. LSSU hit the post twice late in the third period, and shortly afterward took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Zac MacVoy.

MacVoy, who has eight goals and 10 assists for the season, totaled four points for the weekend on one goal and three assists. Tyson Hobbins and Fred Cassiani assisted on his goal at 16:24 of the third period.

Wisconsin's John Mitchell tied it, 1-1, at 18:17 of the final period.

LSSU goaltender Pat Inglis totaled 33 saves, while Connelly had 25 for the Badgers. The Lakers were 0-for-2 on the power play and held U-W's potent power play to 0-for-3.

LSSU is 5-8-7 overall and has tied its school record for single-season ties. The Lakers' next series is Jan. 8-9 at Colgate.

Wisconsin, which is 10-7-3 overall and unbeaten in its last seven games, plays host to Northern Michigan on Jan. 2-3.
