No. 20 Alaska sweeps Lakers
FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Lake Superior State (15-14-5 overall, 10-13-3-2 Central Collegiate Hockey Association) came up short against No. 20 Alaska, losing 5-1 Saturday. The loss to Alaska (14-9-9 overall, 11-9-8-4 CCHA) puts the Lakers three points behind eighth-place Ohio State in the standings heading into next week's regular-season ending series at Northern Michigan.
Alaska's Jarret Granberg netted the first goal, a power-play goal, at 10:43 of the first period. LSSU junior forward Will Acton (10-14-24) tied the game at 10:10 of the second. Acton's goal was assisted by junior forward Rick Schofield (15-13-28) and junior defender Dillin Stonehouse (2-4-6).
UAF's Dustin Sather scored another power-play goal for the game-winner at 17:35 of the second period. The Nanooks continued their scoring with a short-handed goal from Andy Taranto and an empty-net goal from Dion Knelsen. Alaska rounded out its scoring with a goal from Brandon Knelsen.
The Lakers out-shot Alaska 43-27. Senior goaltender Pat Inglis made 22 saves in the game, while Alaska's Scott Greenham stopped 42 Laker shots.
LSSU was 0-for-5 on the power-play and Alaska was 2-for-7.
The Lakers will play their last regular season games against Upper Peninsula rival Northern Michigan for the Cappo Cup Feb. 26-27 in Marquette, Mich. LSSU has a seven-goal lead in the total-goals series.
