Laker hockey sweeps Canisius

SAULT STE. MARIE - The Laker hockey team shut out Canisius 3-0 Saturday night at the Taffy Abel Arena and swept the non-conference series to improve its overall record to 3-1-0.

The Lakers opened the scoring with a power-play goal at 4:20 of the first by junior forward Will Acton. Acton's goal was assisted by senior forward Pat Aubry and sophomore defenseman Kyle Haines.

Junior forward Tyson Hobbins netted a goal at 5:03 in the first to make it 2-0 for LSSU. Hobbins' goal was assisted by sophomore forward Fred Cassiani and freshman forward Ben Power.

Carl Hudison of Canisius received five minutes for checking from behind and a game misconduct in the second period. The Lakers failed to capitalize on the five-minute power play, but they held Canisius scoreless on five power-play chances throughout the game. LSSU was 1-for-3.

The last Laker goal came in the second period as senior defenseman Simon Gysbers scored on assists from senior forward Brad Cooper and freshman forward Domenic Monardo. The rookie totaled five points during his second collegiate series. Cooper, who was cleared to play last Friday after running into an eligibility snafu due to his transfer credits, contributed four points during his first full weekend of action.

Junior goaltender Brian Mahoney-Wilson stopped all 18 shots for his second career shutout, while Dan Morrison of Canisius saved 24 shots.

The Lakers will be at home against Ohio State at 7:05 p.m. on Oct. 23 and 24. They will celebrate their second annual Pink in the Rink and parents weekend.
