Lakers take Game 1 from No. 13 Ferris State

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - After a four-game winless streak, Lake Superior State defeated No. 13 Ferris State, 4-3, Friday at Taffy Abel Arena. Ferris State is now winless in five straight heading into Saturday's rematch at 7:05 p.m.

LSSU (15-11-5 overall, 10-10-9-2 Central Collegiate Hockey Association) scored four goals in the third period to come from behind against FSU (17-10-4 overall, 11-8-4-3 CCHA).

The Bulldogs started the scoring in the first period with a power-play goal from
Aaron Lewicki, assisted by Justin Menke and Zach Redmond at 15:04. Ferris gained the 2-0 lead in the second at 18:34 with a power-play goal from Redmond, assisted by Mike Embach and Taylor Nelson.

The Lakers started their scoring in the third period with a goal from junior forward Rick Schofield (15-12--27), assisted by senior defenseman Steven Kaunisto (3-11--14) and freshman forward Ben Power (3-14--17), making 2-1. Freshman Domenic Monardo (6-6--12) tied it, 2-2, at 14:40 as John Scrymgeour (5-8--13) and Matt Cowie (2-6--8) drew assists.

Ferris State netted one more goal in the third period giving them a 3-2 lead. The Bulldogs third goal at 19:02 was scored by Casey Haines, assisted by Blair Riley.

Just 13 seconds apart LSSU came back and scored two goals to take the one-goal victory. Schofield won the draw and netted his second goal of the night at 19:12 from Power.

LSSU's game-winning goal came at 19:25 of the third period from junior forward Will Acton (8-14-22), assisted by Schofield and senior forward Pat Aubry (2-9-11).

The Lakers were 0-for-4 on the power-play, while allowing the Bulldogs to go 2-for-4.

Junior goaltender Brian Mahoney-Wilson (13-9-5) stopped at total of 28 shots on net. Nelson stopped a total of 25 for Ferris State.

The Lakers will play their last regular-season home game Saturday against the Bulldogs. LSSU will be recognizing the eight seniors after the game.

The Lakers head into the game in eighth place in the CCHA standings and are within three points of fourth place.
