Lake State splits series with No. 13 Ferris State

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - Lake Superior State fell 2-1 to No. 13 Ferris State in game two of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association series.

FSU (18-10-4 overall, 12-8-4-3 CCHA) ended its five-game winless streak by salvaging the split with the Lakers (15-12-5 overall, 10-11-3-2 CCHA).

After a scoreless first period, the Bulldogs scored at 13:55 of the second period. Mike Embach netted a power-play goal from Matt Case and Aaron Lewicki. Ferris State took a 2-0 lead 58 seconds into the third. Casey Haines scored the game-winner, from Blair Riley and Chad Billins.

LSSU came within one goal of the Bulldogs at 4:45 of the third period. Junior forward Will Acton (9-14--23) scored a power-play goal, assisted by senior forward John Scrymgeour (5-9--14) and freshman forward Ben Power (3-15--18).

LSSU had a goal disallowed at the 1:53 mark because the puck failed to completely cross the goal line, and the Lakers came up empty on a power play during the final 1:48.

Lake Superior State went 1-for-4 on the power-play, while Ferris State was 1-for-3.

LSSU junior goaltender Brian Mahoney-Wilson made a total of 28 saves in 58:42 minutes. Ferris State goaltender Pat Nagle stopped 24 for the win.

The Bulldogs moved into a second-place tie with Michigan State in the CCHA standings. LSSU remained in eighth place.
