Lakers tie 1-1 and win the shootout

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - No. 18 Lake Superior State ended regulation in a 1-1 tie with Notre Dame during Game 2 of this weekend's Central Collegiate Hockey Association series. LSSU came up with a 1-0 shootout victory Saturday, giving the Lakers two points in the contest and a hold on fourth place in the league standings.

Fifteen seconds into the first period, Laker forward Rick Schofield received a penalty for excessive roughing that led to a game disqualification. At 7:44 of the first, sophomore forward Dan Barczuk was done for the game after receiving a game misconduct and a hitting from behind penalty. LSSU's junior forward Will Acton was also unable to play due to a supplementary suspension following Friday's 6-1 loss.

LSSU (14-8-5 overall, 9-8-3-2 CCHA) had a total of 38 penalty minutes Saturday, while Notre Dame only received 28. LSSU was 0-for-5 on the power-play and held Notre Dame 0-for-4.

After two scoreless, scrappy periods of hockey, the Lakers netted a goal at 10:59 of the third. LSSU freshman defender Zach Trotman (2-6--8) scored from senior forward Pat Aubry (2-8--10) and senior defenseman Steven Kaunisto (3-8-11).

Notre Dame (11-11-6 overall, 11-10-7 CCHA) rallied back at 11:22 with a goal off the skate of Nick Larson from Kyle Palmieri and Riley Sheahan, tying the game 1-1.

In the five-minute overtime, LSSU had the one man advantage for the last 1:51 but was unable to score.

After 65 minutes of play, junior goaltender Brian Mahoney-Wilson made 27 saves for the night while Mike Johnson of Notre Dame stopped 46.

In the shootout, Notre Dame took center ice first with a shot from Ben Ryan that was stopped by Mahoney-Wilson. LSSU freshman forward Domenic Monardo gave the Lakers a 1-0 lead in the shootout. UND's Calle Ridderwall missed his opportunity along with LSSU's Chad Nehring.

In the third roud of the shootout ,Notre Dame's Ryan Thang was unable to score on Mahoney-Wilson, giving LSSU the 1-0 shootout victory.

After a weekend off, Lake Superior will return to the ice Feb. 5-6 at first-place. Friday's game will start at 7:35 P.M. and be televised on Comcast Local. Saturday's game will be at 7:05 P.M.
