Ohio State evens the series
SAULT STE. MARIE - Lake Superior State split with Ohio State, falling 4-3 Saturday at the Taffy Abel Arena while playing in front of an enthusiastic Pink in the Rink crowd of 2,934.
The Lakers had a 2-1 lead after the first period. Junior forward Chad Nehring scored his third power-play goal of the season, assisted by junior defenseman Simon Gysbers and forward Rick Schofield. Junior forward Will Acton made it 2-0, scoring his second goal of the season. Acton's goal was assisted by junior defenseman Matt Cowie and freshman forward Ben Power.
Ohio State came within one, scoring a 5-on-3 power-play goal at the 19:53 mark of the first period. The Buckeyes tied the game, 2-2, less then a minute into the second period.
Nehring netted his second power-play goal to put the Lakers up 3-2. Senior defenseman Steven Kaunisto and senior forward Zac MacVoy added the assists. The Buckeyes came back to score two more goals to win the game, 4-3.
Senior goaltender Pat Inglis stopped 25 shots in 39:40 minutes of play. Junior goaltender Brian Mahoney-Wilson made 12 saves and allowed no goals during the final 18:40.
The Lakers held Ohio State's power-play to 1-for-5, while going 2-for-2 with the man-advantage.
Lake Superior state is now 4-2-0 overall and 1-1-0 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. The Lakers will be home again next weekend to take on the University of Michigan Friday and Saturday night at 7:05 p.m.
