Notre Dame tops LSSU
SAULT STE. MARIE - Lake Superior State (14-9-4, 9-8-2-1 Central Collegiate Hockey Association) lost to Notre Dame (11-10-6, 7-7-5-2 CCHA), 6-1, Friday at Taffy Abel Arena. The loss ended the Lakers' three-game unbeaten streak.
The LSSU's senior defenseman Steven Kaunisto (3-7--10) scored an unassisted goal at 2:01 of the first period to give the Lakers a 1-0 lead.
Notre Dame, which tied the game 1-1 at 13:41 of the first with a goal by Ryan Thang from Joe Lavin and Kevin Deeth, tallied the next six goals, including five more in the second period. Ben Ryan scored the game-winner on an assist by Brett Blatchford and Ryan Guentzel. UND's Patrick Gaul made the game 3-1 at 6:34. Notre Dame's Calle Ridderwall followed with a natural hat trick.
Junior goaltender Brian Mahoney-Wilson played 27:58, stopping eight shots and recording the loss. Senior goaltender Pat Inglis stopped 14 shots and allowed two goals in the contest. He played 31:46.
LSSU went 0-for-3 on the power-play, while UND 1-for-6.
LSSU will play game two of the series Saturday night at 7:05 p.m.
