Northern Michigan sweeps LSSU
MARQUETTE, Mich. - Lake Superior State dropped Game 2 of this weekend's series at Northern Michigan, 3-0, and fell to 10th place in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association standings.
The Lakers (15-16-5 overall, 10-15-3-2 CCHA) will head to Michigan for the first round of the CCHA Playoffs, which begin Friday, March 5.
LSSU out-scored Northern Michigan 12-9 in the four-game cluster series to claim the Cappo Cup for the first time since 2006-07.
The Lakers and Wildcats (17-11-8 overall, 13-9-6-3 CCHA) went scoreless in the first period of play. Northern Michigan's Justin Florek netted the first goal for NMU from Mark Olver and Andrew Cherniwchan. Northern Michigan went up 2-0 at 7:05 of the second period with a power-play goal. NMU's second goal was scored by Tyler Gron, assisted by Cherniwchan and Olver.
Northern Michigan scored its final goal at 16:42 of the third from Gron, assisted by Gustafsson and Olver. NMU's final goal was an empty-netter.
The Lakers were held 0-for-2 on the power-play. Northern Michigan was 1-for-2 with the man-advantage.
Junior goaltender Brian Mahoney-Wilson allowed two goals and stopped a total of 30 shots in 58:50. NMU's Brian Stewart stopped at total of 33 shots on goal.
The best-of-three CCHA Playoffs will be held March 5-7. The Lakers and ninth-place Notre Dame, which beat Michigan 5-3 during its regular-season finale, swapped spots on the final night of the regular-season. Other first-round series include Notre Dame at Ohio State, Bowling Green State at Nebraska-Omaha, and Western Michigan at Alaska.
