Lakers win fifth in a row

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Freshman Ben Power contributed a goal and two assists to lead Lake Superior State (11-7-3 overall, 7-6-1 Central Collegiate Hockey Association), which edged Robert Morris (3-11-3 overall, 1-4-2 College Hockey America) 7-6 Saturday to claim its fifth hockey victory in a row.

Robert Morris started the scoring with less than a minute into the game. LSSU came back to tie it 1-1 with a goal from freshman defenseman Zach Trotman (1-4--5). The power-play goal marked his first collegiate goal.  It came from junior forward Will Acton (5-9--14) and Power (3-10--13).

The Colonials came back to take the 2-1 lead just over half way through of the first period with a power-play goal from Denny Urban. The Lakers tied the game with 35 seconds left in the first when Power tallied a power-play goal from senior defenseman Steven Kaunisto (1-5--6) and sophomore forward Fred Cassiani (5-8--13).

LSSU tallied four second-period goals. Sophomore defenseman Kyle Haines (1-3--4) scored on assists by senior forwards Zac MacVoy (5-13--18) and Pat Aubry (2-6--8) to make it 3-2. Aubry netted the Lakers' fourth goal of the game from Trotman and sophomore forward Dan Barczuk (1-1--2). MacVoy scored an unassisted goal to give the Lakers a 5-2 lead. Senior defender Simon Gysbers (5-7-12) rounded off the Lakers' scoring in the second period with and short-handed, unassisted goal. RMU's Urban netted his second goal of the game at 17:29 to end the second period scoring with the Lakers in front, 6-3.

The Colonials cut the lead to 6-4 less than a minute into the third peirod. Cassiani made it 7-4 at 4:45 with his third power-play goal of the season. Cassiani's goal came from Acton and Power. RMU's Chris Kushneriuk scored two more RMU goals in the third. Kushneriuk's last goal of the game was scored with an extra attacker at 19:00.

The Lakers went 3-for-4 on the power-play while holding Robert Morris to 1-for-5.

LSSU goaltender Brian Mahoney-Wilson, who is now 10-6-3, made 37 saves for the night. Robert Morris's Brooks Ostergard claimed the loss and stopped 20 shots. RMU made four goaltender changes while getting out-shot, 43-37.

The Lakers and Colonials face off in Game 2 of the non-conference series tomorrow at 5 p.m. The pre-game show will start at 4 p.m. on Talk Radio 1400.
